Follow this guide to setup or check your 2-Step Verification status for Google Workspace.
This procedure is designed to be followed from a computer rather than a phone or tablet. Steps may differ if using a browser on a phone or tablet or using the Google app on a phone or tablet. Use a web browser (Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Onion, etc.) on a computer when following this guide to make sure you successfully activate 2-Step Verification.
Please do not use your direct-dial PCCC phone number as a method of verification. This creates a security risk if your account is ever compromised as your Google Workspace credential is used to sign into the phone system from a web browser.
Browse to gmail.com and login with your PCCC credential.
In the upper right corner of the webpage, there is a circle with either your profile photo or an initial from your name. Click on this circle.
A menu will appear on the right side of the screen.
There will be a pill-shaped button in the upper third of this menu that says, "Manage Your Google Account."
Click on Manage Your Google Account.
You will be taken to a page where you can, “Manage your info, privacy, and security to make Google work better for you.”
On the left side of this page, there is a menu with icons and text.
Click on, Security, it has a lock icon to the left.
On the security page, there are several sections displayed vertically down the page. Some of these sections will differ depending on the individual user. Look for the section headed, “How you sign in to Google.”
Under the heading, “How you sign in to Google,”…
If there is a green circle containing a check mark, you have already setup 2-Step Verification; please review your information to make sure everything looks correct and that you are not using your direct-dial PCCC number as your 2-Step Verification method. You are finished and need not follow this guide further.
If you do not see a green circle containing a check mark, and instead see, “2-Step Verification is off,” click on, 2-Step Verification.
You might be prompted to log in again as a security measure. This is normal.
The top of this page is headed, “Turn on 2-Step Verification.” There will be a blue pill shaped button that says, Turn on 2-Step Verification. Click this button.
A window will appear on the page headed, “Add a phone number for 2-Step Verification.” There is an area to enter a phone number and the option to receive codes by text message or by a phone call.
Do not use your PCCC direct-dial number as the verification number for 2-Step Verification. The number you enter on this screen is only used for 2-Step Verification and will not appear or be used anywhere else by Google Workspace.
Enter a number that is not your PCCC direct-dial number, choose by which method to receive codes, and click on Next.
The window will change to display a box headed, “Verify this phone number” and an area titled, “Enter Code.”
Your preferred number will receive a code using the chosen method.
Enter the code you receive in the box titled, “Enter Code” and click on Verify.
Google will confirm your number is verified. You may close the browser or return to Gmail.
